The Power Struggle: Who Has the Power Over You? ~ #TEWmovement

by: Nicole Knox

The short answer to the above question to the answer is YOU do! YOU …. YOU …. YOU!!!

Although it is not something that we typically recognize, accept or believe, we have always had the power to choose! You may not like the options that you have to choose between; vectorstock_489162-[Converted]however, you ALWAYS have the power of personal choice!!

During the time period that I was contemplating taking the full on dive into entrepreneurship, there were many years of heavy evaluation.  I had a family … my husband had been laid off of work for some time with no prospects … we had become accustomed to a certain lifestyle … I had many reasons of why I “should” have made a different choice.

In my subconscious mind, I wanted the comfort that I thought I had from my paycheck … but that only came with working my job.  And at the same time, I wanted the fulfillment that would come from pursuing my passion on the inside of me.  Metaphorically speaking, it felt as if I would be pregnant with vision, purpose and destiny for eternity in this trap!

Bottom line: I had to make a choice!

When I wrote my chapter in The Entrepreneur Within You, I it wrote for the person who was or is in that same place. I wrote it for the person who is or was assessing the obstacles that an inconsistent income would present while comparing it to the intangible yet priceless sense of internal relief that would come from being able to spend my days, hours, minutes and seconds in pursuit of my own personal legend!

I want you to know that you have a choice … you don’t have to look at what you don’t or won’t have and allow that to frighten you into staying somewhere that you know you do not fit! You don’t have to listen to all the people who have a vested interest in you staying right where you are because it makes them more comfortable! You don’t have to listen to that voice of doubt or fear that is in your subconscious mind (because you’ve been taking subliminal clues from overall society all your life)! And you should note that these cues are inherently designed for a life of mediocrity at the illusion of comfort that comes from a “steady” paycheck.

I want to tell you that the desire of your heart to live a life of more was not given to you by happenstance! That the desperation that you may feel to pursue this dream is not wrong or weird or out of place! I want to encourage you to listen to you heart and ALL it has to say … and then I want you to empower yourself to choose to follow it!!

Making the dream that is in your heart a reality will absolutely be the most difficult mountain that you will ever climb … but once you get to the top, the fight will be worth every sleepless night, every tear you cry, every push you made, every stretch you felt, every fight you had and everything you gave to get there!!!

And the power to choose to create ALL of that is in YOUR hands!

Living Within Your Means, But What Exactly Does That Mean: 3 Steps to Attracting More Money – #TEWmovement

How many times have you heard that it is important to live within your means? When the conversation of budgeting comes up, how does this topic make you feel? If you’re like most of us you probably feel uncomfortable because “living within your means” is defined as scaling back on the choices you enjoy the most.

Americans spend millions on dining out, going to the movies and concerts. We love shopping (for many, shopping is therapeutic). We enjoy vacationing, buying new cars, decorating our homes, and treating our children to the things that also give them great pleasure.

So the thought of budgeting makes us cringe. Why, because very few people want to “live within your means”. We want to buy what we want whenever we want it. In other words, what you really want to know is how to attract more money to support the lifestyle that you want to live.

We attract into our lives whatever is in alignment with our most dominant thought(s). Our thoughts decide how we feel, and our feelings act as a magnate to physically bring to us what we think about the most. Therefore, if your main thoughts are on lack and debt… you will attract lack and debt. If your thoughts are focused on prosperity, health, joy, happiness, everlasting love, friendships, a great paying job, and many other things that you imagine for yourself… that’s exactly what you will attract.

You are most likely only familiar with two options to help you live within your means: 1) cut your expenses to fit your budget; or 2) increase your income to fit the lifestyle that you want to live. Let’s briefly discuss these two options and then I will offer you a third option that you will probably find appealing and easily adaptable.

Well, we’ve pretty much discussed that option #1 is not an option. To continue to ignore what you want for your life only causes you to subtract even more from your life. The thought of lack ONLY produces more lack.

Now, for you option #2 probably feels better because the thought of attracting more money is not as difficult as many may think. For most working class Americans we seek more income by taking on a second job, or seeking a promotion/raise on your current job.

The problem with option #2 is that if you work harder to earn extra money, when will you have the time to enjoy spending this extra money. Trading time for money also produces lack… a lack of time for exercising, relaxing, sleeping, enjoying quality time with family and friends, vacationing, dining out, and participating in the other things I mentioned earlier.

So then what is the answer to attracting more money to live within the means of our choice? The answer is the Law of Attraction.

As I stated before, the law of attraction means that you attract to you what you think and feel the most. Instead of thinking that you have to give up something because you can’t afford it or thinking that you have to take on another job to be able to afford it… focus your attention on the cost of what you want being reduced to fit the budget you have allotted for it.

Right now our country is finally bouncing back from one of the greatest fiscal fiascos in our history. This is good news because most of the things we like the most (houses, cars, clothes, etc) are being sold at a fraction of the price it was before the financial meltdown.

I was recently reading an article in the Robb Report magazine about an 11, 400 sq. ft home on Sailfish Point Island, Florida that was once listed for $6.5 million is now being sold for $2 million. OMG… let that sink in for a moment! That is a $4.5 million reduction in price for the SAME house!

Instill this in your psyche: the life you live is based upon the decisions you make. And the decisions you make are based upon the thoughts and ideas you focus on the most. So from now on, decide that you will live the lifestyle of your choice… and you won’t have to spend a lot of money to do so!

Until we meet again: DreamBIG, plan, get excited, and take action NOW… for the world is waiting to cheer your success!

How to Live Your Brand ~ #TEWmovement

How to Live Your Brand (originally written for NBC5 Chicago | Inc.Well)

As a business owner or marketer, if you’re not living and loving the brand you’re selling, please count me out as a customer. Are you selling your new line of make-up, but giving out Mac “Viva Glam” air kisses? Designing clothes no one ever sees you in? Your actions are sure to hit you square in the profits.

If you don’t believe in your product, why should the marketplace?

During a recent trip to Taiwan, a country that’s working hard and smart to be a top-of-mind destination for avid bikers, it became readily apparent they get the importance of putting actions behind words. What I experienced there was beyond a few slick ads touting the pleasure of riding. It was a holistic effort designed to capture the attention of the consumer and turn them into Taiwanese bike-culture believers by essentially doing two simple things that are easy for every entrepreneur:

1. Keep it real

After being fascinated by the story of Giant Bike chairman King Liu’s nine-day ride around the whole island at age 73, I couldn’t help but be impressed. Hearing about a man in his seventies biking the Taiwanese perimeter wipes out all excuses not to get your own pedal on. Seeing senior leadership bike into the parking lot certainly drove home the idea that they were in-tune with their product. Because they use what they sell, their feedback comes from a place of an end user’s experience, which bodes well for future innovation.

2. Make it fun

People should enjoy and benefit from engaging your brand. Taiwan is selling biking as a lifestyle and using amusement and improved health as the lure. While visiting, I was energized by seeing teams from around the world excited to compete and onlookers arriving on their bikes to show support. The message that “riding is cool” was not lost on me. A beautiful bike ride around Sun Moon Lake delivered exactly what the Taiwanese promised, a great way to stay in shape while taking in gorgeous scenery. They made sure promoted biking areas throughout Taiwan were well-marked and free of bumps and trash … as there is nothing better than a brand delivering on its promise.

With the right attitude…the facts don’t matter. – #TEWmovement

Donna Finals-4226D-2Today I have a two part presentation…In part ONE want to tell you three stories from my life. That’s it. No big speech…Just three short stories. In the Second part we will help you uncover what YOUR story will be. The first story is about transition.

I came from what was known in the 60’s as middle class family. Although they liked to say “upper middle class”. My parents were children of the Great Depression: that was cold water flats, meatless meals and hand me down clothes. No labels, no fashion statements…just warm. Luxuries were very few and saving for the future was a far off dream.

Both of my parents attended college, but did not graduate. My father was drafted and served in the military during WWII, then used his GI benefits to purchase a home in a small undeveloped Chicago suburb called Maywood.

The plan was to raise their only daughter there and provide her with all of the benefits they never had.

It was a TV sitcom life. A stay at home mother who baked and attended PTA meetings; A father who was moving up in his blue color field and a daughter that attended every class known to parenting. Ballet, tap, charm school…public elementary school, private high school anything to isolate her from “bad” influences.

Then life happened; the parents divorced, and I was plunged into a blended family, went from private school to public school, part-time employment and eventually, teenage pregnancy. I was literally disowned by my family and at 18yrs old I was on my own with a 1 month old son to support.

Their parting words to me were, you’ll be working the streets in 6 months. In my mind, the fact that I had no money, no place to live, no family to turn to and knew nothing about the real world did not matter. I had a job to do and a responsibility to live up to. I knew nothing about food stamps, and how could I be overdrawn…I still have checks left?

When things got really bad, I would make 1 large pan of tuna casserole, divide it into 6 pieces, and that was my menu for the week, so that I could provide for the needs of my son. To this day I cannot eat casseroles.

For inner strength, I would read constantly, focusing on stories of our ancestors – slaves in fields with superhuman attitude of survival and later, prosperity…people like Helen Keller, deaf and mute, who became a global symbol of what can be done against the odds…and I knew that that was the kind of drive and commitment that would carry me through. The facts didn’t matter.

The second story is about evolution.

I took computer science in High School and later computer operations as a vocational program (actually, when I finished that course, I was hired as the school’s first assistant director of admissions – but that’s another story and I promised only THREE today); years later, I was introduced to the new world of technology – Microsoft windows, and managed to talk myself into a sales position that involved selling technology training for this new innovation into large corporations.

Everything I once knew was out of date.

At the end of my first month, my employer (picture a boot camp drill sergeant…he only had one level of communications…loud and in your face) told me that on the phone I sounded “ignorant and unsophisticated”.

The fact was – he was right. And I had a terrible attitude – I took the job for all the wrong reasons. Think of terms like “out of the frying pan and into the fryer”, or always escaping to places that need escaping from.

But I still had a family to provide for (by now I had a son and a daughter) and this was a very well paid opportunity. The fact that I had no experience could not be allowed to matter. I had to make it work. So I stepped back and examined what I was and was not doing. I re-focused my energies and my attitude.

I put in 60 hour weeks and had my daughter come to the office after she got out of her (yes private) school and yes she worked right along with me. I took every class I could; and I became the company expert in a key technical area, and built relationships that I still have today. When I resigned from that company 18 months later it was as a senior account executive, the first senior account executive of color and ranked #4 out of 32 account executives. The fact I had no experience no longer mattered.

My third story is much like your stories – Re-invention

And now, I have embarked on new phase of my life where I have the opportunity to share what I have learned and assist others in shortening their learning curve. The economy is rocky and the facts are that the vast majority of businesses that start even in a good economy face huge challenges. Employment is hard to find, the older you are. And retirement is becoming a myth. Recently the news reported that 80 had become the new 65. Talk about moving the carrot! Sounds like fun!

But having lived through the civil rights era, watching man land on the moon, medical miracle after miracle, Nelson Mandela emerge from prison, the fall of Apartheid, and seeing a Barack Obama assume the most powerful position in the country…arguably the world…When the facts and logic said these things were not possible, I know that with the right attitude we are each capable of greatness in our own way. Because with the right attitude…the facts don’t matter.

Donna Smith-Belinger is a positively powerful woman who lives in Chicago. She’s the president of Group Endeavors. Recently she spoke before the National ABLE Network and left a message for us all: “With the right attitude…the facts don’t matter.” With her permission I include it below. It’s inspirational about overcoming circumstances with the right attitude.

Entrepreneurial Dilemma: Whom to Hire? – #TEWMovement

When you’re looking for people to hire to help build your vision, whom do you hire?

1. All in the Family

What about your relatives? What is the trust level that you have with them? Can you trust them with your finances, your dreams, and your privacy? Do they have the skills to accomplish the needed tasks?

2. In the Hood

What about the community that you grew up in? Are you desirous of finding a way to give back? To work with people that have known you all of your life? Of extending to local folks the same opportunities that you discovered?

3. School Fair

What about high school or college students, depending on the nature of your business? Is there a work-study program that will offer up viable candidates for the positions that you have available? How well are these candidates vetted if at all? Has the school guaranteed them employment?

4. Online: eHire Me

From Craigslist to Angie’s List to LinkedIn, there’s no shortage of opportunities to hire people, but how will you arrange further interviews? Will everything be done virtually? Can you check the references that they give? Are there samples of their work anywhere online?

5. A Warm Handshake

Recommendations from people you know can always be a boom or a bust.  What is the quality level of the person’s work? Are they just doing favors to procure other favors down the road by recommending them to you? How experienced are they in your field? What are their price/salary requirements?

6. Telescope with your Microscope

What are your long term goals with the hiring? How long do you expect the new hire to be with your company? How much do you expect to invest in their training and retention? How easily can they be replaced? Once trained, will they just leave your company for a more attractive offer from a competitor?

These are pertinent questions that we all have to deal with in our quest to find good employees. As entrepreneurs, we discover very, very quickly that no one will care about our business the way that we do, so what will be their primary motivation? Money? Do they believe in what you’re doing? Are they clearly using their time with you as a stepping stone?

As I wrestle with these issues, I always keep in mind to treat others as I’d want to be treated, and to think of my own days as an employee. That helps me stay balanced and focused in my quest to hire. There are always diamonds in the rough out there, because as current visionary entrepreneurs and former employees, we sure were!
